Have you got the RAID controller driver?

You will also need to make sure that the RAID disks are set up. If you've never done it before, it can be a step you don't even know about.

Are you using the Dell Openmanage Systems deployment CD to kick off OS installation or just a vanilla Win2008R2 cd?

Also, you might want to try their installation CD which you boot from to start with and select an OS and it provides the drivers for the OS, although I' not sure it will be compatible with 2008 R2 but might be worth a go

If that doesn't work, its the fun of getting the drivers into the 2008 r2 media or sticking them on a floppy disk

Make sure that you have the drives initialized and raid drivers available to install during setup.

Ray,
Call Dell and get the latest firmware for all pieces of the server (including HDD). Then ask them to help you download the .ISO for the Dell Server Installation and Server Management CD/DVD. Download and burn to disk and then run that from a reboot. This disk will walk you through installing the OS and help set up the drives and RAID config with the necessary drivers.
This is not the link you need, but you need one of these for your 1850:

This is all new to me. I thought I could wipe it out like a regular computer. Can anyone offer me step by step?

You don't need to disable the RAID. I recommend you start from the beginning. What is the current setup of the server? Do you want to keep the current setup as is? Go from there. If you reinstall the OS, you will wipe the data. If you want to be secure, break the RAID and build a new RAID and the data will be lost. You might want to delete and recreate a RAID if you don't like the setup.
Servers like an 1850 are usually not like a desktop. They need more prodding to be taken apart. If you need help, send me a PM and I can call you/you can call me and we can straighten out things.

Here is a step by step on how to setup the raid which will probably help.

You will almost definately have an existing virtual disk on there which you will need to delete before creating another. If you are wiping the box then you can't do anything wrong in here so have a play and read around the topic, as its the perfect time to train yourself up!

I want to wipe it completely out and install fresh copy of 2008 R2. I don't even care about the raid. I am now in the dell openmanage and I see controller 0 under that says PERC 4e/SI controller 0
state: ready
firmware version 5.21x
virtual disks on controller 0
virtual disk 0
state: ready
read cache: enabled-read ahead adaptive
write cache: write back
layout: raid 1
size:68.24 GB

If you are in openmanage, you can install 2008 R2 and it will wipe out the data and leave u with a fresh install. If you want a more thorough wipe, you can either call dell and ask them for their recommendation on software to do a wipe (i received a link to download an .iso for OMSA)
http:/
or look online for a data wipe program. I would call Dell and have them make a recommendation.

Make sure that you are loading the newest versions of the controller drivers into windows server setup with a usb drive, had this issue a while back with installing 2008 on a PE2800. They run the same hardware.

Dell's OpenManage install disk which ships with the server (or DL a current version from Dell for your server model) makes OS installs very smooth and walks you through step by step including RAID config. Not using the install disk is doing it the very hard way. :-)
